Optometrists and doctors are forever telling people to eat healthily, but for most people, that’s often easier said than done. That’s why, since 2015 I took to recommending recipe books specifically for healthy eyes. With my go-to book seemingly no longer available, I discovered and now recommend the book “Eating Right For Your Sight”. Here’s my review of the book.

In this review, I’m going to take a look at what this book is all about, who it’s for, how easy it is to use and then my final conclusion.

What’s it all about:

This is a cookbook completely dedicated to recipes that promote good macula health. This is essential in the fight against age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of registered blindness in western countries. (Check out my video that explains AMD here if you want to know more on that) There is a lot of good science to suggest that nutrition plays a vital part in the prevention and outcomes of macular degeneration.

The authors of the book are Jennifer Trainer Thompson and Johanna M. Seddon (MD and macular health specialist).

And they have created this book in association with the American Macular Degeneration Foundation – an organization that appears to have a lot of great resources to help people with macular health questions and concerns. (I’ll leave a link to them and where you can get this book in the box below this article).

The aim of this cookbook is summarised by a paragraph in the American Macular Degeneration Foundation site that states … “The easy part of eating for eye health is learning which kinds of foods are best, foods like salmon, eggs, corn, blueberries, peppers, and leafy green vegetables. The hard part is finding fun, varied, and delicious ways to make them a regular part of your diet. Eat Right for Your Sight… takes care of that, providing recipes that make healthy eating a treat.”

Who is this book for:

In short; we could all benefit from eating healthy and with the health of our eyes in mind. However, if you are someone in the early stages of macular degeneration or you are in a higher risk group, such as over 60 or you have a family history of it, then it is extra important that you consider how you can make every meal a healthy one for your eyes.

Question For You: Out of interest – Let me know in the comments below if you are worried about your sight and if you currently cooking and eat foods to try and keep your eyes healthy, I’d love to know.

Ease of use:

  • The  book itself is a good size book that is robust enough to last regular use in the kitchen with average care
  • Font size is just right with most recipes fitting on one page
  • There is good use of the colored font to separate descriptions from the ingredients
  • The photo quality of the meals are good and offer an inviting glance at what your dish should look like

Content:

  • Compared to my old recommended eye health cookbook, which now appears to be unavailable to buy. This book, Eat Right for Your Sight, appears to be a lot more ‘down to earth’ in terms of the recipes being perhaps less fancy and more hearty, using perhaps more ingredients that the average person can easily find and afford.
  • The book is packed with 88 recipes that are organized well into the following categories; Small bites, soups, salads, main courses, side dishes, desserts, and healthy drinks
  • Here’s a montage of some of my favorite looking recipes (without infringing on their copyright hopefully…)
  • This book has some great information on what foods are advised for our eyes as well as the recommended nutrients that we need and the  Recommended Daily Allowances (RDA) – which is super helpful when you take into account the fact that with every recipe, they have also provided a nutritional profile for the meal, so you can figure out whether you are getting enough of one thing or another or if your supplements are taking you over the RDA
  • It’s clear that the entire emphasis of this book is on macular health, with a great section explaining what AMD is at the beginning of the book, as well as the authors going out their way to make sure that the 85 recipes in the book carefully cover the recommended nutrition for a healthy macula and eyes
  • I also love the fact that clearly thought has been given to creating recipes that do not involve heavy over cooking methods in order to preserve the freshness of ingredients and the nutritional value of the food as much as possible

The not so good:

  • If you are a meat lover and have to have meat with every meal, then there’s not that much in the way of meat recipes. However, there is a in the beginning section of the book a page dedicated to what foods you should have in the pantry. You’ll be please to know that they do recommend 12 lean types of meat that I guess you can add to your meals as you see fit.
  • Having said that, a low meat diet is probably advisory anyway as part of a healthy sight promoting lifestyle.

So in conclusion:

I think this is a fantastic book, that I now recommend to my patients that really want to eat right for their sight. It pretty much ticks all the boxes in terms of being science lead in terms of the necessary ingredients, it’s convenient and simple to follow and on top of that, the food in here is hearty, wholesome food for the entire family. On top of that, this book is backed by medical professionals and The American Macular Degeneration Foundation.

I’m going to go ahead and rate this book a strong buy!

I’m gonna leave a link to the places you can buy the book from in the box below if you’re interested in picking it up.
