So you picked up your shiny new glasses only to discover that they are a fingerprint magnet or maybe you’ve had your glasses for a little while now, but they just seem to be getting harder and harder to keep clean, in this blog post, I’m going to be giving you some tips to help you keep it nice and clean without damaging your lenses.
And afterward, people ordered new glasses that come with multiple anti-reflection coating, it’s not uncommon for them to notice the fact that fingerprints are just so much more visible. Well, this can be disappointing, it can also indicate that your coatings are doing the job which they were created to do and that’s because with fewer reflections bouncing off the surface of your lens, dirt, grime, and fingerprints are just not hidden anymore by the reflections and are more visible to see for people who don’t have these coatings on the lenses, you may well find that just with a normal cleaning of your lenses over time, more grease and grime collects on the lenses and they just become harder and harder to keep dirt-free over time.
So how do you fix the situation and keep your lenses nice and clean? Here are some tips.
Tip 1, your cleaning cloth is key.
The cloth that we use to clean our glasses is probably the most important tool when it comes to keeping the glasses clean, so what have you been using up to this point is probably not working, and for that reason, I recommend that you just get rid of it straight away and start all over again. Many of the free cleaning cloths that come with glasses are pretty poor quality, so I wouldn’t rely on these as many people do, to use regularly to keep your glasses clean, especially if you find that you’re having problems with the cleanliness of your lenses in the first place. You want to invest in a high-quality microfiber cleaning cloth, they aren’t pricey but the difference a good cleaning cloth can make to the ease of removing grime and oils and dirt for fingerprints can be huge. Some of my favorite cleaning cloths include the Pentax super clean lens cloth, which is a favorite amongst many photographers. Sadly, there may well be supply issues of this product now, and it may or may not be resolved going forward shortly.
Now, another alternative would be the Calo firm branded clean cloth, which is widely available and I highly recommend but there are other good brands out there, another cleaning cloths available on the market. So, you know, really ask around, get recommendations from friends, also ask your practice and you’ll find that many practices do have an additional cloth that you cannot bring to.
The difference between a good and bad cleaning cloth lies in the microscopic features of the cloth surface. So don’t make the mistake of assuming that firstly all costs are made equally, and secondly, that the cloth that came with the glasses is the best or the recommended cloth to get the best cleaning results. This is why most optical practices will have extra cleaning costs that you can purchase separately as an upgrade because these are made to a high quality and standard and with a better microscopic surface quality to give the best cleaning results.
Tip 2 is degreasing with the right solution.
Now, when you get your glasses, they usually won’t come with a cleaning solution, so it’s wise to invest in one. The purpose of cleaning solution is to break down the stubborn grease that can build up on your lenses over time and if only a cleaning cloth is used, then this is likely to be a problem at some stage, calo cloth makes a great example of a cleaning cloth that can be purchased on its own or as part of a kit with a cloth and I here is a link to that below;

There are plenty of places where you can find good quality cleaning solutions, as well as clean clothes and you, don’t have to use your cleaning solution every single day, every other day is perhaps good enough, especially if you feel the need to give your glasses a deep clean. Using a cleaning solution should form part of that regime that these solutions don’t cost much and it’s worth the investment because the impact that they can have can be significant once you have a good cleaning cloth and a good cleaning solution.
I don’t believe that there’s any special way to either rub your lenses or hold the frames to get the best clean results, some important points to be aware of, though, are that it’s possible to damage your lenses or frames by taking shortcuts or using the wrong products, depending on the type of plastic that your lens or your frame is made from you may need to be careful what type of solution you use to clean your lenses. So, for example, some frames and lenses can become damaged or more fragile if you use alcohol or even acetone-based product on your lenses. Also, using detergents such as washing up liquid or soaps can weaken the lens coatings, if you’ve got an anti-reflection coat to your lenses, then this can then make it possible for you to scratch your coating when you clean it with a cloth and the same respect using overly abrasive materials like your clothes or tissue paper to clean your lenses can cause scratches on the lens surfaces as well.
Do you have glasses that have been impossible to keep clean? Let me know in the comments section below. Also, let me know if you are using the free cleaning cloth that comes with the glasses and what you think of that?
